Shaded Pen

Do not send submissions by email. Only submit original, unpublished material. Do not submit previously published work, even if it appeared on your personal blog, or Facebook, or your creative writers’ forum. Works that we like enough after the first look to consider publishing will be checked for originality.

We will reply within four weeks of the date you submitted your material. We do not accept simultaneous submissions. In other words, do not submit your story elsewhere while it is under consideration by our editorial team. Multiple submissions are fine, but we will only accept one for publication per period, and yes, it may take a minute to decide which of your submissions to accept if we like them all.

We only accept stories that stand on their own merit as complete works. Individual chapters of a novel are acceptable, if the chapter can be read as a stand alone piece.

We have a 5,000 word limit on submissions. If your story is 5,100 words, please edit before submitting to us. Submissions that exceed this length will not be evaluated.

Upload as MS Word (.doc or docx) format in the submission form.  Do not use any other file format. Do not send by email.

In the SUBJECT line, put the title of the submission in quotation marks, then the genre in parenthesis, then the word count rounded to the nearest hundred words. Example: “My Submission” (Literary Fiction, 3100 words). On the first page of the submission, include your legal name, mailing address, email address, and phone number. If you wish to use a pen name, please indicate it as such under your legal name.

We acquire first print and Web publication rights upon your acceptance of our offer for publication. We will send a contract detailing specifics with all the boring legalese. Upon signing and returning it to us, we will submit a one-time royalty payment of $20.00 USD to your Paypal account. You must have a Paypal account to receive royalty payments from us.

We use Submittable to accept and review our submissions.
